EU Circular Electronics Initiative

This Action aligns with the following Calls to Action from the Circular Economy Action Agenda for Electronics

1. Incentivize and support product design for circularity

5. Encourage bring-back by consumers

6. Set up effective collection systems

As part of the Circular Economy Action Plan, the Circular Electronics Initiative aims to promote longer product lifetimes by addressing the shortcomings in durability, circular design, presence of hazardous and harmful substances, recycled content, reparability, access to spare parts, upgradability, e-waste prevention, collection, reuse and recycling of the electronics industry.

Objective for 2021

The actions within this initiative include, among others, (1) regulatory measures for electronics and ICT under the Ecodesign Directive, (2) a ‘right to repair’ for electronics products, (3) regulatory measures on chargers for mobile phones and similar devices, (4) improvements on the collection and treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment including by exploring options of an EU-wide take back scheme for phones, tablets, and chargers and (5) a review of restrictions on hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

According to the Commission work programme for 2021, published on 19 October 2020, the non-legislative initiative would be put forward in the fourth quarter of the year. A public consultation on the Ecodesign Directive is running until 23 August 2021.
