Waste shipments – Revision of EU rules
This Action aligns to the following Calls to Action from the Circular Economy Action Agenda:
- Enable efficiency and transparency in compliant and responsible transboundary movement (Electronics, CTA 7)
The Waste Shipments - Revision of EU rules initiative aims to facilitate that EU policy on waste shipments promotes recycling within the EU to support the transition to the circular economy. Additionally, it will explore ways to reduce the export of waste, such as (1) a better inspection system; (2) measures against illegal shipments and (3) measures to avoid potential environment-and-health related adverse effects caused by shipments of waste to third countries outside of the EU.
Objectives for 2021
Through this action, the European Commission intends to revise the Waste Shipment Regulation (WSR) which lays down procedures and control regimes for transboundary shipments of waste. It started in 2020, when it completed its roadmap and public consultation phases. Its adoption by the Commission is planned for the second half of 2021.
