Context

In February 2021, the Latin-American and the Caribbean Circular Economy Coalition was officially launched as a new initiative to promote circular economy with the aim of supporting the region to advance and invest in the circular economy transition as part of the COVID-19 recovery. Initiatives like the LAC Circular Economy Collation bring to evidence the region’s commitment to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

Ambition behind the Latin America and the Caribbean Circular Economy Coalition

As a platform to exchange best practices and promote South-South and North-South cooperation, the LAC Circular Economy Coalition will provide science-based knowledge on the opportunities and co-benefits of a circular economy approach. Specific goals include reducing extraction, protecting biodiversity and natural resources, minimizing pollution, avoiding further inequalities and improving people’s health and well-being.

Plan of Action

The LAC Circular Economy Coalition overall aim is to foster an imperative resilient, sustainable and inclusive economic recovery by implementing best practices through collaborative work between governments, companies and society as a whole. Such a goal includes:

  • Promoting eco-design and innovation in the region

  • Advocating for the “reduce, reuse, repair, revalue, recover and recycle” approach

  • Fostering long-term economic productivity, green jobs and ecosystems regeneration

  • Supporting access to financing by the public and private sector, with special emphasis on small and medium enterprises

In 2021, the objectives include the creation of working groups by sector (notably plastics, electronics, food and agriculture, cities and construction, industrial simbiosis and tourism) and the publication of the regional common Vision for a Circular Economy in LAC.
